My favourite ebook compiler (and why)

So you want to publish your own electronic book?

Great idea. But which software will you use to compile your webpages into a downloadable ebook? Here's the compiler I use. And why. Plus a link where you can get it for FREE.

Ebooks are profitable.

Ebooks have often been called the most profitable business on the Internet. Your cost of producing the next copy of your digital book is virtually zero. So is your delivery cost. They truly are the perfect Internet product. After you've recovered your initial (minimal) costs, every single sale you make is pure profit.

And much of it can be automated. Imagine... Automatic money rolling in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your site selling around the clock. Maybe even a squadron of affiliates out there selling for you too.

Yes, ebooks are a wonderful business to be in, full-time or part-time. And they are produced using a piece of software called a compiler.

But which compiler?

That's the question I faced before producing my first ebook,
Niche Marketing Explained
.

First I tried another compiler. But I had problems and couldnt find a way around them. And I'm still waiting for a reply to my email asking for help.

Then I downloaded Sunil Tanna's Activ E-Book Compiler for free. After the initial learning-to-drive that always accompanies a new product (at least, for me it does!), it compiled perfectly... Or it would have except that I have 30-something chapters, and the free version will only process ten. No problems. I paid. Then it did its thing perfectly.

Customer Service:
When I needed help to make the compiler do something special for me. I wanted to insert an inline frame -- not that you'd need to, and I wouldnt bother again. But Sunil supplied next-day replies to my emails... and I live on the other side of the world to him (well, to most people in fact).

Why I recommend this particular ebook compiler

After using Activ E-Book Compiler to prepare the Niche Marketing ebook, I can recommend it to you if you want a powerful system with these features...

  • Unlimited use. You can publish an ebook... just one. Or you can make ebooks galore... as many as you like. At no further cost.
  • Internet linking to sites of your choice. Hyperlinks are inserted as easily as they are on webpages.
  • Save and resume your work. For me, this was very important because the ebook was not produced in one sitting.
  • File compression to make your ebooks small. One the Internet, small is beautiful. Small files are tranferred faster and therefore cheaper for people who are paying by the minute for their online connection time.

Those are the basics you'd want in a compiler. But this one has more features that you might (or might not) choose to use. With Sunil's compiler, you also have these built-in options...

  • Expiry and free-trial features for shareware-style ebooks.
  • Unique serial numbers in every ebook.
  • Built-in search engine in your ebooks.
  • Splash screens to show your logo while your book starts.
  • Create a Rebrander, a separate program that allows your users to customize the ebook, but only in ways that you specify, without recompiling and without editing your ebook.

By the way, the awards certainly impressed me...

    • 4 Cows from Tucows.com
    • ZDNet Editor's Pick

And here are some even more advanced features...

  • Password protected pages to protect your work.
  • Icon customization. The compiler includes 700 icons for you to choose from, or create your own.
  • Creating ebooks that look different, or link to a different page on your site depending on the day of the month, whether a password has been entered yet... or many more choices.
  • Load, save, and generate password lists.
  • Support for massive CD-ROM projects.
  • Use JavaScript, Java or VBScript to include browser based games, or make your images dance across the page.
  • Step-by-step guides to creating ebooks using HTML, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Optional advanced multimedia support.

    Plus...

  • Free 10-lesson Ebook Business Course by email
